Rebecca Baxter

“I’ve lived with obesity for as long as I can remember—even as a child. I’ve tried everything from Slimming World to diet after diet. Nothing worked… until I finally got the right support.”
Rebecca’s journey began early in life and has been shaped by resilience, openness, and a deep desire to help others feel less alone. After undergoing bariatric surgery in 2025, she has lost over 5 stone, experienced significant pain reduction, and gained a renewed sense of confidence and activity. Now, she’s stepping into a new role as a Patient Advocate for Obesity UK.
“The Obesity UK Facebook group helped me more than I can explain—long before surgery, and even now. If sharing my story helps one person feel less alone, that’s everything.”
Rebecca’s Reflections
Rebecca describes living with obesity since childhood, always being “on the larger side,” and facing bullying throughout school. Despite being very active – looking after five horses and two dogs – her weight and associated pain became increasingly difficult to manage. The tipping point came when chronic hip and back pain began to affect her mobility and daily life.
After a four-year journey through the NHS weight management pathway, Rebecca had surgery in early 2025. While recovery was mentally and physically tough – especially after the sudden loss of her mum – she now feels stronger, more confident, and more in control of her health.
She credits much of her progress to having a strong support network, including the Obesity UK Facebook group, which offered relatable, practical advice and encouragement from people who genuinely understood.
Rebecca’s Advice to Others
“It’s not a race. Everyone’s journey is different. But you’re not weak. You’re not lazy. You deserve support.”
Rebecca is passionate about sharing her story publicly to challenge stigma and inspire others to seek support without shame. As a Patient Advocate, she looks forward to being a voice for real people navigating obesity – in parliament, media, or simply in the community.
