Volunteer Stories
Emma’s Journey to Empower Others
Emma, a former primary school teacher and mother of two, joined Obesity UK as a volunteer administrator in 2018. Emma had struggled with obesity since childhood and understood firsthand the challenges faced by children and parents alike. After finding encouragement and resources through Obesity UK’s online community, she decided to volunteer, hoping to provide the same support she’d once needed.
Today, Emma spends her evenings moderating discussions in the charity’s support group, where she connects with families and individuals from diverse backgrounds. She answers questions, shares helpful tips on managing day-to-day obstacles, and provides a listening ear to anyone feeling isolated in their journey. Emma also helps the charity with awareness campaigns, using her teaching background to create educational posts and presentations that empower members to advocate for themselves.
For Emma, volunteering has brought new purpose and self-confidence. It’s rewarding to be able to give back and feel part of something that makes a genuine impact on others’ lives. For Obesity UK, Emma’s contributions are invaluable—her warmth and relatability make her an ideal advocate, helping to foster a supportive, welcoming atmosphere where members feel safe and encouraged.
David’s Role in Peer Support and Motivation
David joined Obesity UK as a volunteer three years ago after undergoing bariatric surgery and experiencing a complete lifestyle transformation. His journey to a healthier self wasn’t easy, but Obesity UK’s resources and online support had helped him stay motivated. Determined to help others avoid feelings of isolation, David decided to give back by becoming a peer support volunteer.
As part of his role, David leads weekly virtual meetups, where he shares his journey and facilitates open discussions. His role is to encourage people to set realistic goals and help them feel less alone in their journey. David also collaborates with Obesity UK’s staff to create peer-to-peer support resources, drawing from his own journey to tailor content that resonates with members struggling with similar challenges.
David’s role has been life-changing for him, too. Sharing his experiences has not only reinforced his own commitment to a healthy lifestyle but also given him a sense of purpose and pride. Obesity UK benefits immensely from David’s dedication and openness; his story inspires and reminds others that they can find their way through challenges with the right support.
Sarah’s Advocacy Work to Influence Change
Sarah, a retired nurse, joined Obesity UK as a volunteer to advocate for better healthcare and support for people living with obesity. With over 20 years of healthcare experience, she knew firsthand that systemic change was needed to address the gaps in obesity treatment and support. Sarah found her way to Obesity UK through an online search for advocacy opportunities and quickly realized she had found a cause she was passionate about.
Today, Sarah volunteers as an advocacy coordinator, organising meetings and representing Obesity UK at healthcare forums and community events. She also works closely with the charity’s policy team to advocate for changes in healthcare policies and treatment availability. Sarah’s involvement has led to partnerships with healthcare professionals and local councils, providing a louder voice for Obesity UK’s mission.
For Sarah, the work she does is deeply fulfilling. It’s a continuation of her career in healthcare, allowing her to contribute to a cause she cares about in her retirement. Obesity UK has greatly benefited from her experience and expertise, as her efforts in advocacy are helping to pave the way for a more understanding, compassionate healthcare system for people with obesity.
